When Should My Child Have Their First Dental Visit?

We follow the guidance of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), which recommends scheduling your child’s first dental checkup around their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth coming in. Even if not all the baby teeth have erupted, these early visits matter: they help establish strong oral hygiene habits, support early prevention, and let Dr. Nikki Shafiei monitor your child’s development from the very beginning. How Can I Prepare My Child?

Many parents worry about how their child will respond. A few things help:

• Book a morning visit, when your child is typically well-rested and more cooperative (we can provide a school excuse note if needed)
• Talk about the visit positively at home, framing it as fun and friendly
• Try kid-friendly descriptions, such as “the dentist will count your teeth” or “the dentist takes superhero pictures of your teeth”
• Avoid phrases like “it won’t hurt” or “you won’t get a shot,” which can unintentionally introduce fear

What Should I Bring?

To help check-in go smoothly, please complete or bring your child’s medical history form and insurance information. If available, also bring:

• A list of current medications
• Prior dental records, if transferring from another practice (we can request them with your approval)

What Happens During the First Visit?

When you arrive, our friendly team helps your child get comfortable. We use gentle behavior guidance such as Tell-Show-Do and positive reinforcement to build trust, and we introduce dental tools in a calm, non-threatening way, often demonstrating on your child’s hand first. Dr. Shafiei performs a thorough exam and reviews her findings with you. If your child feels nervous, they are welcome to sit in your lap during the exam. We can also discuss any concerns you have, including thumb-sucking, nutrition, or cavity risk. At the end, we celebrate your child’s great effort with a gift bag and a prize.
